The Department of Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies at the University of Toronto is now accepting applications for its Postdoctoral Fellowship in Italian Studies, a competitive program designed to support to recent Ph.D.s. Open to Canadian and international candidates, the fellowship provides an opportunity for scholars to pursue original and impactful research in Italian Studies, while offering fellows the opportunity to build a strong research profile at one of North America’s leading research universities.
“Investing in postdoctoral fellows is central to our mission of fostering research excellence,” says Luca Somigli, professor of Italian Studies and interim chair of ISPLAS.
The program welcomes projects spanning literature, linguistics, cinema, history, diaspora studies, cultural studies, pedagogy, and related interdisciplinary and comparative fields. One to two fellowship is awarded annually, providing the recipient with dedicated time and resources to pursue original research, expand professional networks, and contribute to the intellectual life of the Department through teaching and public engagement.
Valued at $50,000 plus benefits for a 12-month, non-renewable term, the fellowship begins on July 1, 2026. The application deadline for the 2026–2027 fellowship is February 28, 2026, with results announced in the spring.
