Title

The World within the Convent: Fiammetta Frescobaldi (1523-1586), a disabled nun from Renaissance Florence

Supervisors

Laura Ingallinella

Description

In this proposed thesis, I aim to provide a chronologically structured biography of Fiammetta Fercobaldi’s life and a comprehensive overview of her writings in relation to her physical condition and religious status. How did Fiammetta position herself—her intellectual persona—in relation to her physical state? I will answer this question by focusing on the intersection between Fiammetta’s bodily perception, literacy, and interests, and discuss how this relationship was translated into Fiammetta’s works. In addition to interrogating Fiammetta’s work as evidence of the ways in which a secluded and disabled nun perceived the spaces outside her convent, my dissertation will also assess the level of influence established over Fiammetta’s work by her social status (she was a member of a prominent family from Renaissance Florence) and the Dominican order.
