Manuela is a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto. She is currently working on a project on Americanisation and gender discourse in modern Italian comics, focusing on the years 1934-1965. Manuela obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge with a thesis on the development of popular press in Fascist Italy. She has published on the process of Americanisation of Italian society through popular magazines and has co-edited a special issue on the emancipation of Italian women. Her research interests include the impact of censorship in the popular press and the Americanisation of Italian popular culture.
