 Count of Dozza and famed member of the Accademia dei Gelati under the name
  of Rugginoso, Ridolfo Campeggi is undoubtedly one of the most fascinatin
 g figures in 17th-century Bologna. Nevertheless his poetry is still little
  studied and mistakenly considered of secondary importance, often labeled
  as bare Marinist work. However, his collection of sonnets and madrigals 
 gives us back a vibrant portrayal of the Bologna of the first decades of t
 he 17th century in which wit is the key to reading, interpreting and shap
 ing reality. This Goggio Lecture aims to highlight how Campeggi's vast and
  complex work is not a void exercise in style but a true and diverse testa
 ment to the political, academic and cultural life in Bologna. Bazzichetto
 ’s recent critical edition offers unexpected insights to explore with rene
 wed interest the rich and multifaceted network of literary academies in It
 aly, their affiliates and their extraordinary socio-cultural context. In 
 this lush forest of lyrics, the Seventeenth century - and, with it, the
  instances of Baroque literature atlarge - is confirmed as the great centu
 ry of Early Modernity.Sebastiano Bazzichetto (Ph.D., University of Toront
 o) is a cultural facilitator and philologist who teaches Theory of Knowled
 ge and World Arts and Cultures at an IB school in the Veneto region; for 
 a couple of years now he has also been teaching a MA course in Italian Lit
 erature at the University of Padua. Besides his teaching activity, Dr. Ba
 zzichetto is a librettist, journalist, critic and curator, regularly le
 cturing on Italian culture, literature and language for numerous national
  and international institutions.Ridolfo Campeggi, conte di Dozza e membro
  illustre dell’Accademia dei Gelati col nome di Rugginoso, è senza dubbio
  una delle figure più affascinanti del panorama felsineo di primo Seicento
  benché sia ad oggi ancora poco studiato ed erroneamente considerato un mi
 nore, spesso etichettato come pedissequo marinista. Tuttavia tra tornei e
  giostre, rutilanti festeggiamenti per nozze comitali e principesche, eb
 urnee Filli che osculano e sgambettano, giovani monacate, corrispondenze
  di amorosi e d’ingegnosi sensi, la raccolta del Rugginoso di sonetti e m
 adrigali ci restituisce un’immagine viva della Bologna dei primi decenni d
 el XVII secolo in cui l’arguzia è la chiave di volta per leggere, interpr
 etare e plasmare la realtà. Questa Goggio Lecture vuole quindi evidenziare
  come la vasta ed articolata opera di Campeggi non sia mero e vacuo eserci
 zio di stile ma verace e variegato specchio della vita politica, accademi
 ca e culturale bolognese. La recente edizione critica della poesia campegg
 iana offre inoltre spunti inaspettati per scandagliare con rinnovato inter
 esse la fitta e multiforme rete delle accademie letterarie in Italia, dei
  loro affiliati e del loro straordinario contesto socio-culturale. In ques
 ta lussureggiante selva di rime il Seicento – e con esso le istanze del Ba
 rocco – si conferma come il grande secolo della Prima Modernità.Sebastiano
